Tip of the Week – Skewer Evenly

Aaaah, summertime, when grilling outside is de rigueur. One of my favorite meals to grill is kabobs because that way I can cook my meat (or in this case, shrimp) and veggies/fruit all at once.

This week’s tip is about arranging the food on your skewers so you have tasty kabobs with all of the ingredients cooked to perfection.

Years ago I learned the hard way that  the trick to making tasty kabobs was not by arranging the food according to color and having different ingredients on each skewer so they would look great. Not by a long shot.

No, the trick to tasty kabobs is to skewer “like food” together so that it will cook evenly. For example, I’ll put all of the shrimp on their own skewers because the cooking time is going to be much different than some of the denser fruit or lighter veggies.

The kabobs may not look as pretty upfront, but you can add and remove the skewers from the grill at different times, ensuring grilling perfection.

I still see pre-made kabobs for sale at grocery stores that look great, but keep in mind the ingredients have different grilling times. If you buy these for convenience sake, rearrange them so you have the slower-cooking food on separate skewers from the faster-cooking food.

Once grilled, the food comes off the skewers anyway, so make your tastebuds and tummy happy!

Bon appetit!

Eat, drink and be merry!
